NEW DELHI: Pakistani prisoner Sanaullaha, who was beaten up by fellow inmates in Indian Held Kashmir's (IHK) Kot Bhalwal jail, died in a Chandigarh hospital on Thursday, Indian media reported.

Indian media quoted hospital sources as saying, Sanaullah suffered kidney failure on Wednesday which became the main cause of his death.

He died around 05:00 AM on Thursday morning.

Sanaullah, 52, was serving a life sentence in Jammu's Kot Bhalwal jail, was undergoing treatment at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, where he was shifted after being hit with a brick and hammer by a fellow inmate on Friday.

Physicians at PGIMER had already declared him brain-dead. He was on a life-support machine since he his arrival at PGIMER.

The attack followed a similar assault in Pakistan's Kot Lahkpat Jail, which led to the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh.
