American tourist in India reportedly raped

An American tourist traveling in northern India was allegedly gang raped by a truck driver and two accomplices in Manali, a tourist destination about 300 miles from New Delhi.

"The 30-year-old was raped by men in a truck on Monday night. They offered her a lift and she accepted it," police inspector Abhimanyu Kumartold AFP.

No arrests have been made, but police have ordered all truck drivers in the region to report to the police station, the Times of India reports.

A number of recent high-profile sexual assaults in India, including the rape and murder of a 23-year-old Indian college student on a bus in New Delhi in December, have sparked international outrage and protests in India.

And it may be having an effect on visitation to the country. One study showed female tourist arrivals are down 35% in the wake of multiple incidents. Tour operators surveyed by an Indian trade group reported a drop in female visitors, particularly women from the USA, Canada, Britain and Australia.
